Eva Knutz and Thomas Markussen from the Social Design Unit have co-organised the PhD Summer School, ahead of the Anticipation Conference 2026 at Politecnico di Milano, together with Manuela Celi, Marzia Mortati and Victoria Rodriguez Schon.

During the Summer School doctoral students and early-career researchers will be introduced to the use of design games in participatory design research; a design-based method of inquiry which affords experimental and playful ways of engaging with seemingly irresolvable complexities and dilemmas related to anticipatory practices. Literally trying to embrace the ambition of the call: Designing within Paradox.

A warm welcome to 36 doctoral students and a big thanks to Ted Fuller, John Carney, Sirkka Heinonen, Riel Miller and Lucy Kimbell for accepting the invitation to give inspirational talks, create moments of provocations and feedback – and to act as expert guest players.
